My Constant

My Constant head from Saskatoon, Canada with melodic punk-rock and some post-hardcore influences. If you ask them they would define themselves as “a high energy, contemporary punk rock band from the Canadian prairies.”  The band released their first EP “Dear Hailey” on August 23, 2011 – five fast, energetic songs with loud guitars and lively vocals, produced by Ryan Andersen from RedDoor Recording.

In June this year the four piece group consisting of Brian Snell on vocals, Justin Sikorsky on guitar, Corey Dick on drums and Tyler Gilewicz on bass showed their new creation – “Where I’ll always be” – a demo with much slower rhythm and emotional charge that I would describe as a “punk-rock ballad” and according to their words it’s “the best song they recorded so far”.

Here’s what Brian, Justin, Corey and Tyler say about their influences, future plans, best show they’ve ever attended, groupies and… who is Hailey.

How, where and when did you create My Constant?

Tyler and Justin spawned the idea of playing more than just covers in Justin’s bedroom in 2005. They recruited Brian in 2006 to play guitar but found out he could sort of sing so that worked out well. The band really rounded out when they snagged Corey. Our First complete song written as a Foursome was Six To Midnight (I’m With You) which can be found on our debut EP entitled Dear Hayley.

Melody seems important part of your music, which bands inspired you?

We have a wide range of influences, with each person in the band bringing a slightly different perspective. The melody is shaped from a lot of trial and error to see what we can do differently. We’re always trying to push ourselves. Bands that we all draw from and look up to would be The Used, Finch, Story of the Year, Mayday Parade, A Static Lullaby, Funeral For a Friend, Taking Back Sunday, just to name a few.

Your new demo “Where I’ll always be” sounds more ballad compared to your first EP “Dear Hayley”. Does that mean that you’re transitioning to calmer sound and less guitars?

Sometimes when you’re messing around with ideas something really pretty comes along and you just have to run with it. We all feel that this is the best song as a whole that we’ve ever written so far. As for transitioning to a calmer sound you’ll just have to wait and see! 😉

I can’t help myself asking who is Hayley and why did you dedicate the EP to her?

Hayley was a name that we chose, because at the time, none of us knew anybody personally by that name. It was chosen to reflect that girl or person in your life that is and always will be your “Steady rock” so-to-speak. Hayley, for us represents a constant companion that pushes us when we need pushing but carries us when we’re down and out. We think that it is something everyone can relate to in one way or another.

What is punk for you?

In a simplistic form, punk to us is about being true to yourself and standing up for what you believe in. Not being easily influenced and understanding that you have a mind of your own.

What is the best show you’ve ever attended?

We’ve all been to so many good shows that it would be pretty difficult to narrow down the favorite. A recent one that we all went to and enjoyed the crap out of was New Found Glory’s, Sticks and Stones – 10 Year Anniversary Tour.

If you have to pick three bands to play on one stage with, who would you pick?

New Found Glory, The Used, Ten Second Epic

What should we expect from My Constant in the near feature?

Currently we are working on some acoustic renditions of our tunes as well as a handful of fun covers. We have every intention of returning to the studio in late fall or early spring to release our sophomore EP. We are looking forward to working again with the extremely talented Ryan Andersen of Red Door Recordings here in our hometown of Saskatoon.

Ok, one last question as a band with only male members how do you feel about the groupies?

HAHA you said male members…Well there’s our potty humor kickin’ in again.
Considering 2 out of the 4 of us are married and the other 2 in long-term relationships…we love that shit!!! But seriously, other bands love playing shows with us because we have a rigorous groupie screening process.

If you’re somewhere in Canada you can catch them performing acoustic shows at smaller venues and coffee houses around their hometown, Saskatoon, Canada. Well if far away – here is a video of My Constant doing a cover on Limp Bizkit’s Livin’ it up.

Oh yes, they’re also on YoutubeFacebook and Twitter. And don’t forget to check out their music on ReverbNation and Bandcamp.  Werd!
