Fishdoctor @ Pianos, 09/27/2013

On a Friday night I ventured to the Pianos to see Fishdoctor – a Brooklyn based indie rock band, self-described as guys who “drink tea and make music.” Well, there was no tea, but they were definitely making music. Not a typical night for me, but sometimes you just have to switch it up and let the new experiences in. Just stay open.

I’ve never been to Pianos at the LES before, so I was slightly disoriented by the noise, semi-drunk crowd and flashing lights, and then surprised to find the band setting up in a small dimly lit room. The stage was covered with effect pedals (must have been more than one for each song because the show didn’t exceed 30 minutes) and wires – you knew what was coming.

The band set up quickly and the crowd grew bigger, filling the tiny room. You could smell the excitement of the fans. I had no expectations going to the show, but what unraveled on stage was a pleasant surprise.

The sound was clear, the lead singer Michael Romano had a charismatic presence on stage and as the light turned fromblue to yellow to red and orange, the sound filled the room and people started dancing, lost in the music, oblivious to the world outside the Pianos. The six men band played with fierce energy and powerful sound, and you could tell that they were putting their 100% into the show.

The downside? The 30-minute could have been longer and even thought the crowd cheered “One More Song!!!” for a few minutes, their wish wasn’t honored. But maybe that just leaves you yearning for more?

Fishdoctor are Michael Romano (Vocals, guitar), Jared Lindbloom (Vocals, keys), Michael Panico (Guitar, keys), Alex Shifrin (Bass), Brian Garbedian (Drums) and Rocco Romanelli (Auxiliary percussion). Find more about the band on their Facebook, Twitter @fishdoctormusic and Bandcamp pages.
