The Society Islands – The Big Sleep

Eclectic, synthy and raunchy-catchy, the debut album of The Society Islands deserves your attention. Cologne,Germany-based singer & multi-instrumentalist Boris Rogowski creates a musical world characterized by unconventional stylistic shifts, ominous undertones and its creator’s firm belief that there is no such thing as bad influence. And yes, when you listen to “The Big Sleep” you feel the satisfying of a really good B-movie. The structures of the songs are poppy with a indie twist, quirky instrumentals and lyrics about cheap life, swimming pools and lazy Sundays.

“The Big Sleep” opens with the monologue of a person in a drug-induced state of wonder whose discovery that she “can’t use colour” only leads her to the conclusion that she “can do everything”. The second track “From my mouth into yours” features romantic bells and dreamy female vocals.

Check out the unofficial video for “Archer” here – the lead singer and by my humble opinion – the best song out of the album. It’s based on footage from the enchanting 70s drama by Rainer Werner Fassbinder “Effi Briest” telling the story of a woman marrying an older baron and moving to a house on the Baltic sea, supposedly possessed by a ghost.

The Society Islands’ second album will please the fans of bands like Tame Impala, Grizzly Bear, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Porcupine Tree, Brian Eno…
