There are some bands that are ridiculously loud and then there is DESTRUCTION UNIT. Their set at Brooklyn’s Market Hotel is not the first time I have walked out of a venue with my ears still ringing. But it is the first time I walked out and everything being said to me sounded like it was being said from 5 miles away, and two days later … my ears are still ringing.

Raucous would be an understatement for what D – Unit did in Brooklyn on March 23 because I feel pretty safe in saying that if they were any louder the windows would have been shattering into a million little pieces.

But there is more to DESTRUCTION UNIT than just sheer volume, they are a psychedelic punk trip who put on a show second to none. They cut the lights except for the colored lights they want, they fill the room with fog, and then doom rings out of their amplifiers as they lay waist to whichever venue was stupid enough to host them.

Who can even tell what song they are playing as they absolutely decimate with every note. It’s honestly hard to tell sometimes whether they are playing songs at all or just making as much noise as possible.

At The Market Hotel the group, once labeled the most dangerous band in America by Rolling Stone, was joined by three of New York’s finest hardcore punk bands and while I’m sure that they were all stoked on the opportunity to open for a former Reatard it’s a bit unfair to have hardcore punk acts opening for a group as talented and DESTRUCTION UNIT.

The acts with a similar level of energy are never packing the songwriting talent of Ryan Rousseau and the ones who can match D-Unit for talent are almost never bringing anywhere near the same level of energy as the fearsome Phoenix-based five piece.
