The Legendary Pink Dots @ The Knitting Factory, Brooklyn

Unusual, strange, quite rare, a breath of fresh air from the Brooklyn scene, inspiring, dark, gloomy and profound. These are all words that come in my mind on prima-vista to describe last night’s appearance of Dutch-British experimental band The Legendary Pink Dots at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. It was also pretty amazing to see a band I discovered when I was 14, along with other artists like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Christian Death… And a band that’s been playing for 33 years and still sounds so powerful.

The show was great. Really great. Edward Ka-Spel’s charisma and nuances are so rare in today’s ego driven scene. And he actually sounded so humble, nice and spiritual talking with fans (among which me) after the show. The lack of press and professional photographers really surprised me, but at the same time made me feel privileged that I could share with you at least a tiny piece of the whole experience.

The performance of The Legendary Pink Dots was captivating from the beginning to the end, but I want to tell you about one of the highlights – one of the stories Edward told to the audience. How at the end of his life a man wants just to get a glimpse of heaven. And the angel agrees – but just a glimpse. The guy looks in and what to see through the heaven’s doors – large Bank of America sign… “And I won’t sell my soul, cause it’s not worth anything” Edward finished.

Among The Legendary Pink Dots’ pieces Edward Ka-Spel performed some by his side projects. Here’s one of the favorites: The Tear Garden – Isis Veiled played on Encore. [The Tear Garden is a band formed by Edward Ka-Spell and cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy. Enough said.]
