The Gravity Drive

When we talk about pop music there is a fine line. On one side you have the Top 40s I don’t really want to talk about and I’m sure you don’t really want to read about. On the other side is the so called alternative pop with original melodies and sweet-sounding rhythm, which are never too sugarcoated.

The Gravity Drive are proudly standing on the other side. The “harmony-driven alternative pop duo with a bite” hails from The UK and already landed plays on BBC and over 35 regional commercial stations around The UK and Europe. Ava and Elijah Wolf create pop music with velvet smooth vocals and electronic influence and… they’re also married

The Gravity Drive are currently currently finishing their debut album, ‘TESTAMENT’, which is being mixed by Peter Schwier, who worked with names as Dexys, Electronic and Pet Shop Boys and produced by Paul Knight-Malciak and The Gravity Drive.

On the duo’s Soundcloud page you can stream the album track “Tear me apart”. Sexy song with a lusty charge starting with the words “Come to me on your knees…” and perfect double vocal harmony. Give special attention to the beautiful violin solo on 2:15.

Another song from the upcoming album is the b-side “Push your luck” which has more of a synthpop feeling:

When your visit their website pay special attention to the Elusive remixes – especially “Cherry ripe”. It starts with a low-tuned cello solo smoothly flowing into electronic beats:

Not on the last place comes their brand new single called “Circles”, which tenderly talks about missing your lovely one. Elijah’s voice combined with Ava’s whispering sounds superb!

Here is what The Gravity Drive told me about being married and being in a band together, love, inspirations and future projects:

What came first the band or the marriage? How did you started the band?

The marriage came first, then baby and then band. Ava did some backing vocals on my EP as a solo artist and we just realized it really worked. Then Steve Lamaco played one of those songs on Radio 2 and we found we had something special and that we should work together.

Do you think that the other half of your band being also your other half in life helps the music?

Definitely. The intimacy of our relationship communicates through our music and we are told that it plays out when we perform live.

Did you had other music projects before ” The Gravity Drive”?

Yes, but nothing as great as this.

What are your inspirations?

The Beatles, Radiohead, Kings of Leon, The Everly Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Ella Fitzgerald, The Verve, Sex Pistols, Michael Jackson, Goldfrapp.

When should we expect your debut album? Can you tell me something more about it and your new single “Circles”?

‘Circles’ is released on 27th October. Our debut album, ‘TESTAMENT’ will be released in the new year.  We have self-funded the album and have put our hearts and souls into creating what we consider to be an outstanding debut album. We can’t wait to share it with the world!

You both sing but who composes the music and plays the instruments?

Elijah writes the songs on acoustic guitar. If they pass the Ava test she then builds a groove and mood into the song. We then both write further hooks and melodies until we are both satisfied. We then send that to our friend and programmer for some Paul Knight-Malciack magic.

You seem to me like a clever band that loves reading besides the music. What kind of books do you like?

We like the works of Herman Hesse, Carlos Castaneda, Shakespeare, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and… Vogue.

Where can we see you playing nowadays?

We have a few dates promoting our next single ‘Circles’ at The Joiners. Arms, Southampton 23rd Sep. The Hydra Bookstore, Bristol Oct 26th and The Railway Inn Dec 14th. More dates will be announced soon.

And here’s the video for “Trick of light”. Cool!
