The Divers are a London-based alternative rock band that blends grungy spirit with brit-pop sound. I found about them through Soundcloud and digged the easiness and sincerity of “The way you are”, as well as the melody of “Hang Around”. So I decided to ask the frontman Pete Hickman few questions and get to know them better. Here they are.
How did you formed the band?
The band formed back in 2012. It was originally a solo project but later turned into a band after a few line up changes. I knew Mike (bassist) from music college, he was the first person I met when moving to London. We’d always played together in bands so it always felt natural. James (drummer) joined after we held auditions because our old drummer left, then Asbjorn (guitarist) joined after our debut single ‘A Little Better’ to complete the line-up. So we’ve been evolving as a band for over a year now, but now I feel like we’ve just started to find our feet and develop our sound further. It’s an exciting time for us.
Why did you decide to call the band The Divers?
I wanted something very easy to remember, a friend of ours said that we have ‘a very deep sound’ and Divers just came to mind.
Which bands have been your biggest inspiration?
Bands who are more concerned with making good music rather than their appearance. No gimmicks, just hard work and great music. Pearl Jam has been a rock and a constant source of inspiration. They embody everything a good rock’n’roll band should be. Other than that their are plenty of bands who inspire us but as far as band/artists who share a similar sound -Band of Horses, Wilco, Elliott Smith, Manchester Orchestra. Just bands who write great music and are honest, we’re not musical snobs regarding genre so anything goes.
What’s coming next for The Divers?
We are currently working on new tracks and getting ready to record our debut EP which will be coming 2014, so stay tuned!. We’re really going to be pushing the boat out on this next record.
