Modest Mouse At Kings Theatre: Worth The Trip

I was pleasantly surprised to make my first visit to the opulent Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn this Tuesday. The historical venue first opened in 1929 as a combination of vaudeville and movie theater – when vaudeville wasn’t trendy anymore, the space continued to function as a movie theater until the late 70s, when it was left to deteriorate. The city took things at it’s hands and started renovating it in 2010 to turn it into one of the coolest venue spaces in Brooklyn now. Yes, it’s a bit out of the way, sure, but I could say that the service was at a top level, the sound was good and the venue offers something unique in terms of experience with it’s rich pre-war details and heavy plush curtains. The Ambassador Club premium service they offer is a refreshment to the rather simplistic services most big concert venues in NYC offer. The seats and views from pretty much everywhere were decent and everything seems very organized.

Modest Mouse went on stage about 9:15 PM opening with Dramamine from their debut “This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About” mixed up with the outro of a “Life Like Weeds” from my personal favorite The Moon And Antarctica. The setlist featured 13 songs and 4 encores and the band didn’t have a supporting act.

The indie rock icons kicked off their fall US tour on 09/17 at La Crosse, WI, however the first 2 shows were apparently cancelled. They’re not promoting a new album, rather playing a balanced mix of their discography so far pleasing their fans with their signature sound.
