Lykke Li at the Apollo Theatre – Tragic Beauty /pics+video/

Lykke Li played a sold out show at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY on April 15th. The show sold out shortly after the tickets went on sale and there is a good reason for this: Lykke Li is amazing, the new album is absolutely killing, and her voice is stronger than ever. It’s a tad sad, depressing and melancholy dark but Lykke Li sings her heart out.

The space itself was an odd choice for the show though. Apollo Theatre is a beautiful venue with great sound, but why would anyone expect Lykke Li’s fans to just sit back and enjoy the show? Not that the show wasn’t great to watch – the lighting, especially on “Rich Kids Blues” when the whole stage turned bloody red, was phenomenal.

Four songs in people started to abandon their seats to move closer to the stage and dance. At this point Lykke Li, after finishing the song, said “sorry, my new album is a bit of bummer – it’s all about heartbreak, suicide, and all that depressing shit … but we will dance again.”  And she did.

The show was a mix of old songs (“Little Bit”, “I Follow Rivers”, “Get Some”) that sent the crowd dancing and more melancholy new material from Never Learn, which I loved, but it was slightly too depressing for some of the fans who confessed that they wanted to hear more upbeat tunes.

Of course the show ended with encore. Would you expect anything else? Lykke Li came back with a half empty bottle of Maker’s Mark in her hand and sang her last song in Swedish. Beautiful. Sad. And heartbreaking. It was everything I wanted to hear and more.
