Katya Sanna

Katya Sanna is the singer/songwriter who won the Band of The Week contest last week. Heading from Narni, Italy and endowed with a four octave range, she composes music inspired by the Ancient and Medieval world with lyrics making references to myths and legends. However, her music is very diverse and she enjoys exploring different genres.

“Black is the color” for example is a classic <edieval almost acapella song, that resembles something that Lisa Gerard would compose,

while “Una suite su Urano” sounds like experimental and expressive dark ambient work:

In 2009 Katya issued the CD “Grand Tour” – with her version of songs of The Beatles, Fabrizio De Andrè, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Tori Amos and more. In 2010 she participated at the “Rom’Art Independent Festival” winning the “Alda Merini Award” for her live performance “The Landing” .

Katya is multi-talented and dedicated to other arts besides music. Committed embroideress, multimedia artist and painter she received the European award “Art Golden Card”. She’s also the author of the fantasy trilogy “Le Chant De L’Ange” hosted by “Il baco del millennio” di Radio RaiUno and manages a blog dedicated to myths, legends, traditions and art.

In December 2013 she released her new album “La Via delle Stelle”, my favorite song from which is the noisy and abstract “Anomalocaride”:

Here’s what else Katya said in an interview for Flowers In A Gun:

Katya your music sounds Medieval and reminds me a little bit to Dead Can Dance, how did you choose the genre you’re working on right now?

I have always loved the Ancient music, in fact before starting to produce my own music I sang in a Renaissance music choir as soprano. About the genre of my music-  it is not a choice but a spontaneous effect of my liking for simple, essential structures.

You’re also a paintress and a writer. What came first the music, the words or the images?

I think these worlds come in a parallel – there is not an order, instead as inspiration an image or colors are often the main suggestions.

Tell me something more about your paintings?

As I just mentioned a suggestion came from a particular sound or image can engender a theme a synthesis. My paintings are a synthesis of a metaphysical spheres like a description of a big universe hidden in small details.

What about the writings?

I want to be free when I write or sing my lyrics without having the obligation to comply with the accents and the metric, in this way singing rises new sounds.

Where do you gather inspiration from?

I write my interpretations of stories that affect me from real life but also from cinema or literature.

Do you sing on English or only on Italian?

I sing in Italian, English, French and also in Sanskrit.

How many albums did you put out so far?

Fourteen. My first solo work dates back to 1988, but is right to add the many productions with other artists.

Where we can hear you perform?

I have not planned concerts but there is an ongoing exhibit of the installation art that I have realized connected to the CD “La Via Delle Stelle”(Way of Stars) which represents the Milky Way landed on earth.

Which is your favorite myth or legend?

I don’t think I have a favorite one. I like their strength and eternal presence.
