Do you remember what did you do for your 16th birthday? May be you threw a party with all your friends, got drunk, went on an amazing vacation, spent it with family or may be something else? Well, talented Parisian singer/songwriter Juliette Jules decided to mark the day releasing her debut EP for free: “Today is my 16th birthday. Music is very special to me so I would like to give this gift of my first EP to you. I hope you enjoy it. Thank you.” she writes on her Bandcamp page.

Inspired by underground icons like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and the Sex Pistols Juliette bought her first and only guitar, a Fender acoustic at the age of 13 and paid it by selling one of her paintings.

Music producer and manager Peter Karroll remembers how he heard heard her voice in a park in Paris in June of 2013 for the first time and discovered her: “I was in a conversation with my wife and neighbors while dozens of children played on a playground, from behind us we heard a voice, it was as if the park was instantly converted to a grand concert hall.” “The park became quiet and we all turned and there was Juliette Jules. Her back to us playing the acoustic and singing in the purest voice imaginable. She was singing songs to a friend who sat facing her smiling. Juliette would end each song and they would laugh and talk. It was an incredible moment to experience.”

The Black Crow EP is the best when listened in it’s full entirety by my opinion so I highly recommend you to do so. Still my favorites from it are probably the opening “Johnny Was” which shows very mature and deep songwriting, as well as “The Game” with it’s playful guitar and very sensual lyrics.

Black Crow includes five songs, from which one cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Juliette possesses beautiful and distinctive voice and her songs are impressively mature for her age – it’s not surprise her literary favorites include authors like Voltaire, Steinbeck, A. Camus, S. Zweig, Hemingway, Kafka, and Oscar Wilde.
