The Meaning of Life

Brooklyn-based dream-pop duo The Meaning of Life just issued the video for the first single of their debut EP “Play Fuego”. Starting with the words “The cosmos is a joke” the video of “Laura V” praises the glam with Venetian masks, red accents, empty beaches and… pasta with rose petals eaten straight from the body of a naked girl. All this is beautifully arranged and shown as it would look out of a retro TV. Lovely and slightly fetishistic the clip is directed by Jeremiah McVay & Steven Huber and produced by BTRtv/BreakThru Radio.

The sound of The Meaning of Life is melodic with soft, yet sometimes scratchy and distorted guitars and despite the right amount of noise the haunting female vocals go on first place. Singer/bassist Marta DeLeon and Christian Gallardo say their inspirations include 60s & 80s pop structures, beauty and weirdness  as well as artists like Yo La Tengo, Sade, and the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Marta and Christian met in a typical NYC style – through an ad. He was just ending his Andean adventures and she  was working on a lesson plan on how to make a human robot. All this led to collaborations over iced coffees and David Lychian humor and now both of them are playing and living in Brooklyn, NY.

“Play Fuego” EP, recorded in the summer of 2012 features five songs that rhythmically flow into one another. My personal favorite is “Kinky” and I can’t help myself mentioning the gorgeous guitar solos on 1:56 and 2:54.  “Play Fuego” is now available on The Meaning Of Life’s Bandcamp page and will be free to download from August 14 to September 14, 2013.  You can also find Christian & Marta on Twitter – @TMOLife_ and Facebook.

The Meaning of Life are playing  tonight at Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn NY w/Eastern Hollows, Slowdim & Phone Home! and on 9/27 at Shorewave Hause Houseparty Bushwick. Don’t miss them!
