Philadelphia indie-rock heroes Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, or as it’s fashionable to shorten the long band names – CYHSY, played a sold out show at probably the most perfect location possible – right in the center of the hipster heaven – Williamsburg and it’s Music Hall.
The venue was packed with hip looking kids swinging to the music. However, for me this show was a little disappointing. Alec Ounsworth vocals included way too much yodeling. I’ve never been a fan of it, to start with. I think that probably the only person that does it without being annoying is Morrissey, but doesn’t matter how hip you are – you simply can’t be Morrissey. However, this wasn’t fully Alec’s fault – the sound at the venue was definitely off.
The vocals were boosted, cutting down the otherwise nice electronica beats and post-punk riffs so essential for CYHSY’s music.
However, people seemed to like it, so once again my point of view is pretty subjective. The band’s new album “Only Run” sounds much better on record for sure and I like it, especially the self-titled song and “Impossible request”, I’m posting below. But this show just wasn’t quite right…
Uh-uh, let’s just blame it on the hipsters!
