A noise rock odyssey: Feedtime + Vaz + Sightings + Maggoted @ Death by Audio

The night falls over Brooklyn and I have a day off the next day, which automatically means that I’m heading to a concert, as I’m tired of spending my money in bars, getting wasted and having conversations or else with people I won’t probably (want to) see again.

So I open   http://www.ohmyrockness.com/, which became pretty much my best friend recently…  I I do a quick Spotify check of the bands playing Thursday night…  Psychedellic rock, too girly, too sappless… oh, here is something interesting. FEEDTIME + VAZ + SIGHTINGS + MAGGOTED in Williamsburg’s music-feeding hole Death by Audio. The band that actually catches my ears and makes me go to the show iss Vaz… but mm… a nice noise rock show in a place I’ve never been before, but I’ve heard a lot about = I am down, baby!

Few words about the venue. Great design. Great graffiti, decent bar deals (4$ Brooklyn Lager bottles, which is not bad, especially if you’re tired of shitty Bombs or PBRs), decent sound, cool crowd, intimate, classic underground venue feeling, arcade machines – Meow-meow likes that! Also you can smoke inside.

The concert is announced to start at 9 pm, but I’m late one hour, so I miss the first band Maggoted. I’ll be honest – I don’t know nothing about it and I can’t find nothing in the Net except one black metal & one psychedellic? project under that name, and I’m not sure which one sounds more absurd for opening of this show.

However, the band that is already on stage when I enter DBA is Sightings. They start their gig with a cruel ear melting noise, which turns to the screams of the frontman Mark Morgan. They sound OK on record, I mean I’m not blown away, but the references to the early Einstürzende Neubauten are quite promising. However, live Sightings are barely listenable and I spend most of their gig in the other room, next to the bar. They may be pleasant for the tortured ear of the die-hard noise rock fan, but for me… naah!

A little bit after 11 pm it’s  time for VAZ – my favourites for the night. I will say that I definitely enjoy their gig – they sound noisy, but balanced on the same time,  the songs are raw but with a nice melody structure. The long instrumentals show the high-class musician abbilities of the band members – two of  them coming from the ashes of the influential 90s noise rock band Hammerhead. As I like to say – when its good, it’s fucking good! I will look forward for new releases & gigs of VAZ.

The headliners for the evening are quite legendary. Formed in Sydney, Australia feedtime (yes, with lower case, please) just issued a box-set of their first four albums through Sub-Pop Records and staged a short reunion tour in the States. So here, I am in front of the stage watching Aussie punks in their probably 50s? jamming old-school hardcore punk, wrapped in a powerful bass-heavy and quite noisy sound. How does it feels? Fucking true and charging.

feedtime setlist:

Good noise rock feels like sheer, sleek nylons to my ears. And I love it.
